LH 15: Behind-the-Scenes of Backyard Beekeeping

Welcome to Episode #15 of the Living Homegrown Podcast!

This week I interview my partner in crime – Joe Lamp’l, Executive Producer of the PBS show Growing a Greener World.

Although the topic is backyard beekeeping, this episode is about more than that hobby…

Even if you never intend to raise bees yourself, this episode explains a little bit about how bees work and how/why we filmed an entire year in the life of a beginner backyard beekeeper (and that beekeeper happened to be Joe).

You also get some behind-the-scenes stories and Joe’s insights after moving on from his first year.

You learn:

  • The “why” behind the TV show, Growing A Greener World
  • The importance of bees in our world
  • Why this can be such an exciting hobby
  • Where you can learn all the basics
  • What to expect your first year with bees
  • Can you order bees in the mail?
  • Why there aren’t always clear answers when keeping bees
  • Do swarms mean your hive is doomed?
  • Caring for bees

And there are a couple bloopers after the closing music…Ha!
