Homemade Liqueurs and Infused Spirits by Andrew Schloss.
I own many books on making liqueurs, herb/fruit infused spirits and garden cocktails. It is something I have been doing since legal drinking age (I swear, not earlier) and a couple of my favorite books are now out of print.
There are several new books on the market and several of them have great sections on making liqueurs. But what got me excited about this particular book is that it brings together what I love about many of the well-worn books on my bookshelf and ties them up in one neat little package.
The information is rock solid.
Is It Hard To Make Liqueurs?
Here’s the thing: Liqueurs are composed of just three simple ingredients: liquor (distilled spirits), flavoring and sugar. It is a very simple process that I have discussed before here, here, here and here. (And Jam Cocktails too.)
But there are also little flavor nuances, methods and dare I say…”tricks” to getting the best flavors. This book covers all of that and has a great listing of fun recipes that we can use to create our own flavor combinations.
A Sampling of Recipes:
The book is broken into sections that include: fruit, veggie, spice and flower liqueurs. Then it goes into coffee, chocolate and creamy liqueurs. At the back of the book is a section on mixing cocktails.
Now, you may be thinking “Veggie Liqueurs?”. Yes, there is a section on vegetable liqueurs and it is great.
The recipes use ingredients like tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, carrots, bell pepper and even yam (ok, I haven’t tried that one yet). Before you skip this veggie section, you should know that the author is a very skilled recipe developer with a heavy culinary background and was even the past president of the International Association of Culinary Professionals.
Andrew Schloss knows good food. And every recipe I have tried in this book has been a big success.
