If you are a city homesteader like me, you don’t have access to a big farm supply store to get equipment for your chickens. Some of my friends who to live in a places like Portland and Seattle can just go to their local independent nurseries to find chicken keeping and homesteading supplies! But here in Los Angeles? Not so much.
The best feed store near me is a 40 minute trip (one way). So, I sometimes order online.
Where to Order the Best Chicken Keeping Supplies
I really like MyPetChicken and McMurray Hatchery for good ‘ol feeders, waterers and general equipment.
But if you want one of those newfangled waterers, like the nifty Brite Tap and tank combo…
You need to visit ChickenWaterer.com. I bought one just before the holidays and love it! The lid keeps the water clean and it is easy to refill and hang inside the chicken run area.

Another waterer getting a lot of attention is the Chicken Fountain.
Of course, you can make your own waterer and there are many sites with DIY instructions. And if you want to make a cool feeder from PVC, you can find detailed instructions HERE.
And then there are the egg cartons!
Yes, you can ask friends to give you their old cartons (and I do). But I also like to give eggs as gifts and a blank carton with my handwritten words on the top is a nice touch.
I really like the square-style carton from MyPetChicken because I can place a sticker on top if I want to. They are recycled and a decent price ($0.30 ea) Also, you can order just a few at a time. There is no minimum order.

Ah! If only I could keep chickens in my backyard. The city regs say no, as do the neighbors. *sigh*
