I have been addicted to Pinterest for quite some time and you probably all know about it already. But just in case you don’t, here’s the deal…

Pinterest is a website that allows you to “pin” photos you find on the internet and it keeps the original link so that you can go back to that website later.

For example: a craft photo can lead to a website tutorial with full instructions. Or a picture of food can link you to the recipe.

I have always been one of those people who rips photos out of magazines for ideas and inspiration. I have tons of file folders filled with “DIY Garden Ideas”, “Garden Pathways”, “Recipes to Try”…etc. Well, Pinterest replaces that in an easy to find format that is completely digital!

It is a great way to design a garden or redecorate your home. Just create a board and start pinning your ideas. Very cool.

You can scan a photo or you can pin directly from a website you find while surfing the internet. You create “Boards” to pin to and that keeps all your thoughts, ideas and inspiration organized. AND you can follow other peoples boards and pin their ideas.

Many people are concerned about the copyright issue. And that IS a problem. Pinterest tries to get around that by linking back to the original work, but sometimes links are lost and some people do not attribute photos properly.  But even having a link does not diminish the fact that the photo is being re-used. So it is not a perfect medium in that respect at all.

Also, Pinterest can QUICKLY become a time suck if you are not careful. One pin leads to a board with lots of interesting pins which leads to a person with the same interests as you…and “Oh look something shiny!”…and so…and so on. So BE CAREFUL.

The only weird thing with Pinterest is that you must be “invited” in. You can request an invite HERE.

Have fun! But don’t blame me if you don’t get any work done.

You know about our show Growing A Greener World TV on Public Television, right? Well, Chef Nathan Lyon is our co-host and the chef of the show and…

NathanFilming
Nathan has been working on something incredible for the last 5 years:

His first cookbook…

NathanCookbook1

Let me tell you people, I have seen the recipes and tasted many of them. They are all made using fresh, local ingredients and are delicious, yet simple to prepare. Nathan has a nack for breaking things down into simple steps – Heck! That’s why we hired him!

And get this…HE TOOK ALL THE PHOTOS in the book! (Even the ones of himself!)

  NathanPictures

His mother taught photography and Nathan is extremely skilled at this art form. When we go out on a GGW shoot, he can take better pictures with his iPhone then I can take with my Canon XT Rebel. He has an amazing eye. I just hand him my camera on every shoot. He is that good.

Great recipes? (check) Incredible photography? (check) What more could you want, right???

Well, this cookbook has 5 seasons:

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and…Chocolate.

BE STILL MY HEART!

But more than all of that, Nathan is a great guy. What you see on TV? That’s the real deal. And he totally ‘gets it’ when it comes to eating local. He worked at farmer’s markets for 10 years before becoming a chef.

NathanPickMe

And Now? Nathan needs our help.

UPDATE:  His Kickstarter Project was funded and you can now buy his finished, printed cookbook! Yeah!

It is expensive to print a full color cookbook and Nathan is down to the last few days of a kickstarter program to get the book to print.

PLEASE consider pledging over on his kickstart site. His cookbook makes a GREAT holiday gift and you will die from delight once you have tried one of his chocolate lava cakes. Trust me.

Oh! And be sure to watch his video on kickstarter. You will see why we all love this guy so much.

It happened this week…

A new magazine launched that had people across the country literally drooling all over their computer, iPad and cell phone screens.

LeafMagScreenShot

Leaf Magazine emerged as the latest addition to the garden writing world.

This completely digital garden & outdoor style magazine is filled with sleek photos, well-written and thought provoking articles and…a little sass. It promises to bring inspiration to our laptops four times a year.

Leaf was the brainchild of Susan Cohen and Rochelle Greayer – two well-known landscape designers/garden writers who were disappointed that such a magazine did not exist. So…they just decided to create it themselves!

With the help of managing editor, Lynn Felici-Gallant and advertizing director, Sandra Sloan, this team of four talented women pulled off what many of us have been waiting for…A high style magazine, with links, videos and of course solid information embedded within its pages.

LeafEditors
And THAT is what can make digital reading such a rewarding experience – the ability to bring more to the page that text. By including links, expanded information and video, it takes the value of that work to a whole new level. Unfortunately, many magazines and on line "print" venues fall short.

But the ladies at Leaf "get it"!  WHOOT!

They are garden writers, designers and consumers of this information. So who better to put together a magazine for us? They understand that we want to click on something to get a deeper understanding of the subject. And I know it will get even better with each issue. Thank you ladies!

The best part? IT IS FREE!

You can subscribe for free HERE. Or if you simply must have a paper version, you can order it from their website.

AND they have blog called "Leaflets" with lots of tid-bits and photos.

Leaflets
I have had the pleasure of knowing two of the four women personally and professionally, (Susan and Lynn) and I look forward to spending lots of time (virtually) with Rochell and Sandra as they continue to create Leaf!

High Five to the Leaf Team!

Ya done good!
