Homemade Garden-made Gift Ideas

April 13, 2011 · 7 comments

Erin Vale over at Vale Design has the greatest projects for us gardeners. Check out this teacher's gift idea: a DIY Teacher's chalkboard seed pot and seed packets.  You spray small seed pots with chalkboard paint (I only knew of the brush on paint – cool!), write each student's name on the pot, and fill it with seed packets wrapped in scrapbook paper. Adorable!

These would also make great Mother's Day Gifts, hostess gifts…the list goes on and on.

I also love these darling DIY seed packets. Erin includes a downloadable template for you to create your own.

Thanks to my friend Willi Galloway over at DigginFood for the heads up on Erin Vale's website!

This is so cut! Are the pots kid friendly? I want to make these for my nieces and need to find pots that aren’t breakable.

These pots were made out of clay, so they are breakable. If you want to make them out of plastic, you can do it. The trick is to paint the plastic with a coat of special paint first so that the chalkboard paint will stick. You can find “plastic” paint at home improvement centers OR you can use a brand called “kilz” which is a paint for shiny surfaces.

Paint that paint on first. Let it dry. And THEN paint on the chalkboard paint.

That should work for you!

Thanks for the suggestion and tip!! The kilz paint or “plastic” paint happens to be kid friendly as well?

Karina-

I don’t think the Kilz paint would be kid friendly. (depends on the age of the kids, I suppose). I would suggest that you paint the kilz paint on for them. Let it dry and then let the kids finish the project with the chalkboard paint.
