Forage LA, a restaurant in the Silverlake area of Southern California, is augmenting its menu with the help of volunteer urban harvesters. Every Sunday, the restaurant puts out a call for a type of food (exotic fruit, lemons, lavender) and anyone who has extra can bring theirs by! If for instance you have some tasty lime leaves you could donate, then the chefs will use them in a dish, and you'll get your name on the menu for a little while. (What I want to know is, does it mean a free appetizer?)
Even if you don't have extra, you should drop by and see what Forage is creating this week. Their menu sure looks tasty. Forage LA is located at 3823 W. Sunset Blvd.
Here is a great blog I have been following lately. It is called Living Walls and Vertical Gardens. They have wonderful posts featuring very creative wall gardens like:
The Vegetable Orchestra continues the venerable tradition of making music with ripe fruits and vegetables. Watch them create an instrument and then put on a performance.
Do you need more excuses to get outside? The National Wildlife Federation just celebrated its 72nd annual National Wildlife Week, "an initiative to connect families and communities to nature, raise healthier kids, instill a conservation ethic, and inspire a life-long appreciation of wildlife and the environment." I missed posting this on time…BUT that does not mean that we can't partake in a little outdoor activity NOW!
One really fun thing about the NWF site is that they have a "nature finder" interface so that you can locate arboretums, parks, zoos, and other places to get out to. Hopefully you can find something so that you (and your kids) can celebrate our national wildlife.
Based on the emails I have received, many people are wondering where I went! Sorry for the absence here.
Everything is fine!
I have been working on the new PBS gardening show 24/7 and I had to either let my blog slide a bit or stop sleeping all together.
I tried the no sleep thing, but after about three days you start to hear voices! So, I had to get back on track with at least a few hours each night. LOL
The good news is that I am starting to get caught up on things. I have several posts in the works from garden shows, private gardens and the filming that I think you will enjoy. I have been traveling a lot and capturing photos, videos and podcasts of some really cool gardening people! I can't wait to share them with you.
Here is a bit of a preview:
In Seattle, I spent a full day following around an urban beekeeper who leases hives to city dwellers.
The bees pollinate their gardens, he maintains the hive and at the end of the season, the garden owners get the honey! How cool is that? I have lots of bee information from this day and a great podcast with Corky Luster, the bee man. Can't wait to share that one!
Also in Seattle at the Garden Show, I fell in love with urban goats…
While in San Francisco, I visited many cool places including the private garden of my dear friend Rebecca Sweet. I can't wait to share the photos of her lovely garden complete with charming shed. (Wait until you see the inside!)
So over the next few weeks, I will begin sharing these stories and photos as I catch up on my life. Plus a few tidbits of information I have gathered along the way. And of course there is all the cool stuff we are filming for Growing A Greener World! Whew! A lot to tell.
