Long Distance Gardening

We just had a whirlwind summer! In the last two months my family has been to Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming and Arizona. Yes…we did all that in just TWO months. Whew! What were we thinking?!
Although it was fun to be jet-setters, we are a bit tired of living out of suitcases and glad to be home in our own beds. My dear friends took care of my gardens and my chickens. All fared well. But boy…it is good to be home.
As for the garden, a few things got away from me while we were gone. But between trips, we managed to be home to enjoy most of the deliciousness of our garden including the corn harvest (it was awesome), the zucchini, Italian summer squash, bell peppers and of course…tons of tomatoes. The onions and tomatoes are still hanging on. I think we have a few more weeks of produce from them.I even managed to collect some beautiful Indian Corn from the
school garden we planted last spring. The corn was grown in the
third grade “Three Sisters Garden”. I dried the corn for the teachers to use in their fall decorations.
Don’t you just love the purple husks? So pretty!
I will be harvesting herbs over the next month or two and planting a fall veggie garden. (Come on Snap Peas! YUM!) So good to be home!
I have gathered quite a collection of interesting gardening information, ideas and tidbits through my travels that I will be sharing here over the next few weeks. I’m also going to post on how I inoculated some logs with mushroom spores. Curious??? Oh yeah…Fun stuff!Stay Tuned!

Yeah! You are home safe & sound. The world is right again. I am/was trying to get a potato condo built while you were away (according to your previous blog instructions) out of old utility company wood that mysteriously showed up here on the wood pile… However it is not happening fast (story of my life) so I am going with plan B…a large pot ’til next year. Late season potatoes arrive soon & I’m not missing the opp…You see, I thought I would be clever while you were away & catch up on my T.Loe list of things to-do since you weren’t here adding stuff to it. Oh well. Best laid plans & all. We did manage to install 8 galvanized nests into the chicken coop & today or tomorrow the door is being installed. You know what that means? This weekend it can become occupied & I can check that off my Theresa Loe List of things to do! However, I am not complacent since, my list will probably have to have the addition soon of an inoculated log of mushroom spores so I can’t feel too terrific about my progress. 1 down! 25 or 26 things to go depending on how you look at it….Welcome back. I think.
Oh Karen, you crack me up!!
I promise to give you a few more days before you have to add the mushroom spores to your “Honey-Do” list.
So….getting chickens soon, huh? Whoo Hoo!
I was wondering what happened to you! Glad you had fun, and more glad that you’re back.
Yes, I love those Indian corns! They’re so pretty.
Hi Teresa,
Yeah…The last couple of weeks became too hard to post. Just didn’t have enough time! But I’m back now…for a bit anyway.
:~)

That is just awesome! I like to travel, too. Good thing you had someone looking out for your garden and chickens. The corn looks beautiful and very festive.
do you know what variety of corn that was?
Yes!
It was “Maiz ornamental” by Ferry-Morse seed company. It is meant to be dried as decoration – not eaten.
I hope that helps.
