Now that you have had time to absorb the ideas from the Smith & Hawken display garden at the NW Garden Show, I thought I would post some more photos for you.
This was "Nature's Classroom" by New Leaf Creations (Steve Haizlip).
Here is their design theory/idea for this display: The display is supposed to be a peek at a fictional outdoor garden created by and for urban high school students. These students would be the future horticulturists, landscape designers and green industry leaders. The learning garden is set in the lush natural Pacific Northwest environment with the physical classroom extending beyond the green roof and into the natural surroundings. The students that use this outdoor classroom would learn about sustainable design, incorporating recycle materials and green gardening principles.
The shed roof was planted, but unfortunately it was so tall, we could not get a good look at what was up there.
Along the back were living fences with cutout windows. The last fence had a water feature which added wonderful sound to the display.
Flora over on the official NW Garden Show Blog did a series of posts on this display garden. She documented the process the designer must go through to put on this type of display. There were even a few last minute disasters that caused the designer to purchase a whole truck load of plants/trees at the very last minute. But you could not even tell there was one road block to this display. You can view the series of how this garden was created HERE.
I liked the water feature coming out of the wall. And speaking of water features….Here are some others I found tucked here and there at the show:

Oooh, I LOVE water fountains! My fav is the vertical rock one.
I liked the tower one with the flat pieces in between. It caused a “how did they do that?” moment. But I really liked the carved out rocks for birdbaths too. People kept putting pennies in them. LOL
Ain’t it fun to flower show! (Us writers can turn any word, or pair of words, into a verb whenever we want.)
Hey TC – thanks for stopping by. Yup – It is fun to flower show. (I think it makes a fine verb.)
