Backyard Poultry Magazine

December 31, 2008 · 3 comments

Okay…So, I don't have chickens…yet. But I want them and will have them eventually. Here is a great magazine for backyard chicken owners and those of us who dream of having fresh eggs from our own backyard. Backyard Poultry features articles on everything from breed selection to housing and care for your own chicken flock.

Why do I want chickens?

1) Garden Fresh EGGS
2) Chicken manure for my composter
3) Did I mention Garden Fresh EGGS?

This is, and I am not kidding you, my 12 YO’s absolute favorite magazine!! I had to call their customer service the other day (because I flaked out and sent in 2 renewals) and they are the nicest folks! We used to subscribe to their Countryside magazine too but now that my FIL has moved to our town, we just take his after he’s done reading them. We love Backyard Poultry a lot more though. Some articles are funny and not quite helpful to us (such as bathing chickens for 4-H showing…we’re a practical bunch who don’t believe in prettying up chickens, only keeping them healthy and happy) but some are totally useful and wonderful (such as most articles by Harvey Ussery).

I had a post in my blog showing the color comparison between one of our homegrown eggs and organic eggs that we bought at our health food co-op. It’s like night and day, and it’s why we will have chickens as long as we are able to keep them. :)

Teresa-
I think it is so great that the Poultry magazine is your son’s favorite! How cute is that? I bet he is quite the expert!

I can’t wait to have my own chickens and will probably email you (or your son) with questions when I get started.

That kid is like a chicken whisperer too; he can get to the skittish chickens that won’t come to me or dh. :) He also enjoys reading Hobby Farms and Mother Earth News, so I usually ask him chicken questions myself.
