Flowers in Your Home

August 28, 2008 · 2 comments

There is just something about flowers…They bring a smile to your face. They can add a bit of cheerfulness to an otherwise ordinary day.

Flowerbag_4 I grow lots of flowers and I have always enjoyed bouquets into the house. I especially like to bring bouquets of fragrant herbs inside. They not only entice with their beauty, but also fill the rooms with their sweet fragrance.

Until recently, I would just cut a bouquet occasionally. I did not make a conscious effort to include flowers all the time in my home. That is until last year when a friend of mine told me that she spends five bucks on herself every week. No, not on a grande latte and a muffin — She buys herself a five dollar bouquet of flowers every week at the local farmer’s market. It is her way of treating herself without feeling over indulgent. Unlike a latte, she enjoys that five dollar investment for a full 7-10 days (sometimes longer) before needing to replace it.

Okay…So you might remember that I was looking for a plant based mosquito repellent that smelled wonderful and did not contain DEET. I wanted to use it on my children and I wanted it to not feel greasy and smell wonderful all at the same time.  Tough order to fill right?

Repel_2 Well I found something that works!  It is called Repel and it uses pure Lemon Eucalyptus oil to repel mosquitoes. Now, I did a little reading and lemon eucalyptus oil is one of the only things (other than DEET) that the Center for Disease Control recommends against mosquitoes. Plus, there are numerous studies saying how nifty it is.

I actually tried it and put it to the test. We just got back from a week long trip to Colorado and I saw mosquitoes my friends…big ones!…and they they DID NOT touch us when we had this stuff on. I was impressed.I just wanted to let you know…

I just heard of this little “food fight” going on in Clayton, CA (Near Oakland). Apparently, two little girls decided to make a little extra money on Saturday mornings. Instead of a lemonade stand, they set up a produce stand and sold extra zucchini, tomatoes, melons, cut flowers, etc. from their backyard garden. Tomato_2

Great idea, right?

Well, in the time it takes to say “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious“,  the poor kids were raided by police and shut down.

The ages of the two little girls in question…Eleven and three. Keep that in mind when you hear the next part.

The mayor of Clayton, Greg Manning, is the real scrooge in all of this. He is the one shutting down the girls and he was interviewed by the local news. When I watched the news video (seen here), I actually laughed out loud at his reasoning.

He says, “You know, they may start out with a little card table, selling a few things. But then, whose to say what else they have? Is all the produce theirs? Did they grow it themselves? Are we gonna have eggs and chickens for sale next?”

Oh my gosh — The horror!!!! Why of course. These kids could get out of control at any minute!! What could be worse than children selling eggs?!  It is enough to make someone quiver in their boots! Gosh, why don’t these young kids just sell marijuana like all the other respectable kids trying to make a little money. That would be SO much better!

Unbelievable.

Here are two little kids, growing up in a gardening household who decided to sell veggies instead of lemonade. They are not setting up a “commercial enterprise.” They just want to buy some candy and perhaps a new toy at ToysRUs.

The mayor goes on to say that technically a lemonade stand is also illegal in their town, but they don’t enforce the law on them because they don’t stay up long enough to do anything. I suspect it is that and the fact that the police are busy rounding up all those little hooligans that dare to sell tomatoes on their street corner.

Those little “enterprising kids” better watch out, because this major obviously has too much time on his hands.

Here is a recipe I like to make in the summertime using fresh lemon verbena leaves.

Lemon Verbena Fruit Punch

1/2 cup lemon verbena leaves
5 cups cranberry-raspberry juice blend
4 cups lemon sparkling water
3 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

In a small saucepan, combine lemon verbena and 2 cups of the cranberry-raspberry juice. Cover and simmer five minutes over medium heat. Turn off heat and let mixture steep 30 minutes. Strain into a large pitcher. Add remaining cranberry-raspberry juice and all other ingredients. Chill until ready to serve.

Lemonverbena_6 Have you ever grown Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citriodora)?

That is Lemon Verbena in this photo. It is the tall plant reaching up to the birdhouse.

It is not exactly a common plant and you may have trouble finding it. But if you ever see this plant at the nursery…buy it and buy it fast. You won’t be sorry. It will be in the herb/vegetable section. If you can’t find it there, you can order it through mail order from Nichols Nursery.

Why is it so special? Oh let me count the ways…
